Most of the time when people start discussing location, they mean the street address of some brick and mortar store. Some piece of real estate to house their business and dreams. But me? Nah. Thanks to the wonder that is the Internet, I don’t need four walls and a roof to run my business. In fact, most days I get to go outside to enjoy an amazing view.
The first time I tried joining a direct sales company, I was living in rural Georgia. And I do mean rural. I think the town had something like 150 people living in there. And it just so happened that one of those people was an independent consultant for a particular company. And she had me convinced that I could do the same thing.
Well, here’s the thing — this was a long time ago. Back then, AOL was still the primary means of Internet connections. And it was against that particular company’s official policies (at the time) to set anything up to sell online. No online store, no website, nothing. And online parties? Those weren’t even invented yet.
Needless to say, I failed miserably. I don’t think I even had one order other than myself. And it wasn’t the fault of the company or of the consultant who recruited me. It just wasn’t a good fit. I’m too introverted to go out and try to gather leads. I don’t like approaching strangers and trying to tell them about my company or my products. I don’t like going into people’s homes I barely know. And I hate public speaking.
And my sponsor tried everything. She brought me to the malls, the colleges. We went and set up raffles at businesses. She tried to teach me to be like her because she was successful and that’s how she did it. But me… I’m not her. And acting like her didn’t work for me.
Now, fast forward some *cough*too*many*cough* years later, when the opportunity for Jamberry came along I didn’t exactly jump. Fears and doubts about my previous experience seeped in and had me sitting on the fence for a while.
However, the biggest differences between Jamberry now and the other company then is that I am allowed to embrace the Internet. It’s thanks to the Internet that this introvert living in Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico, is able to embrace direct sales again and have a reach to anyone in the world. That’s pretty amazing! <3
