We go to an event and we get so many business cards, we throw them into our pocket and then when we get home we put them in a drawer or we throw them on our desk…but then that's it. The number of humans who revisit that pile of business cards to find someone is very tiny.

The reason it's not my favorite is because this method relies heavily on whether or not the person you hand the book over to ever actually opens the book.

You may have noticed that there are a lot of books being given away lately, right?

It seems like every time I turn around, there's a new book I see being offered for free, “just pay shipping.”

I'm not sure where this started, but I have been sucked down more than one of these free shipping funnels. The first time I saw it was with Russell Brunson's book, “Expert Secrets.” And this started a whole rabbit hole for me because at first I didn't want to pay the $14.95 for shipping—I thought that was ridiculous when most books shipped (at least at the time) for less than $7. I would rather pay for the book than pay for shipping. But then when I tried to find copies of the book online, I couldn't. It wasn't available in book stores anywhere.

That's when I started to realize how effective this was as a strategy. Now here was this book that I wanted, but the only way to get it was to go through the author themselves and pay the shipping charge. By doing this, I wouldn't just be a reader, I would be a customer.


Especially when you consider the psychological factors that people often tie to their money. Once someone makes a small purchase with you, it's even easier for them to decide to make another purchase from you. And it just grows from there: if someone spends $2 with you, it's easier to get them to spend another $4 to make it $6. Once someone spends $6 with you, it's even easier to get them to spend another $9 to make it $15. Once someone spends $15 with you, it's even easier to get them to spend another $12 to make it $27.

And before you know it, that $27 offer that a few minutes ago would have been “too much money,” is suddenly a steal.

Use Your Book as a Lead Magnet

This is especially helpful if you've already got a lot of content online, like a blog or a YouTube channel, that is already generating traffic.

And unlike those simple guides or checklists that most people use as lead magnets, having a fully-published book on your website as a lead magnet is a great way to build your credibility and get your book into new hands that might not otherwise have a chance to read it.

Obviously, this goes for your digital copy only, as there is no cost being incurred to deliver that; you don't want to be shipping printed books through the mail for a lead!

Gift Your Book After A Discovery Call

I'm going to say something a little weird here, and that is that unless we are talking about time and proximity to your person, I don't believe you can ever give away “too much” for free. This is especially true for things that are already built like courses, eBooks, and other digital products.

But it's useless if all you do is start throwing them at everyone and wait for those people to pick them up.

Imagine standing on a corner of a busy street and giving everyone you meet a copy of your book…how many of them will actually read it? And of those, how many will reach out to contact you again?

Hard to say, but probably not enough to justify handing out that many books.

On the other hand, knowing when to give your book away can be a huge advantage. For example, whenever someone books a consultation with me about their book, sometime during the call as we're discussing what they need, I give them a digital copy of my book, Write Out Loud, for free. I just log into my Amazon account and send it to them as if it were a gift. It doesn't cost me much to do this ($4.99) but it makes a huge impact on them.

I will also sometimes do this when I am sending out a proposal to someone, offering my book for free that they can use to write their own book. I'm proving that I can help them by actually helping them, and that leaves a big impact on people.

So when they are ready to hire someone for that next step in their process, they're more likely to reach out and hire me.
